Mommy Tips: Caring for Your Child’s Skin

As a mom of 4 young children (a 6, 3, and 2 years old plus a 2 month old infant), my priority is their health and safety all the time. That’s my non-negotiable. I make sure the products being used on them are guaranteed safe and effective.

With all the children skin care products coming out in the market today, I still rely on those that have been around for many years because I figured, they won’t be here till today if their products aren’t 100% trusted by parents all over the world.

You see, our children especially newborns, infants, to toddlers have sensitive skin that is prone to eczema, and other skin irritation. So I make sure that their skin care needs are met all the time because I have discovered that skin conditions also have effects on their emotional well-being.

Here are some of the ways we can do to care for our children’s skin that I want to share with you guys:

  1. Protect your child’s skin from the sun. Whenever they go out or even if they’re just at home, I make sure that they apply lotion that has SPF. Too much exposure in the sun can burn and irritate their skin. I want to make sure they steer clear of the sun at it’s strongest so they won’t have to worry about skin cancer later on in life. Choose products that will protect them from the sun’s UV rays.
  2. Ensure less exposure to skin irritants at home. There are household products that can be harmful to our child’s skin. Furniture polish and air fresheners contains aerosols that can be harmful to children. Avoid using cleansers that have dyes and perfumes when washing their clothes too.
  3. Do research on the most common skin conditions of children. The more you know, the more you can prepare and prevent these conditions from happening to your child. And if it does, you are more ready to take the necessary steps in treating whatever skin condition your child acquires.
  4. Seek professional help. Relying on the internet or self-medication may be harmful more than helpful. There are experts who can help treat your child’s skin concerns. Some conditions may require special treatment that only doctors can administer to your child.
  5. Use products that are safe and free from dyes, perfumes, and ingredients that are harmful to your child’s skin. All natural products that are trusted and reliable should be our main choice. Oilatum Bar Soap is developed to reduce the occurrence of dry skin. Suited for dry and sensitive skin, Oilatum is also ideal for the treatment of eczema and other dry skin related conditions. Made out of mild materials, Oilatum soaps help replenish moisture on dry skin allowing the skin’s moisture barrier to normalize. Through this process, the skin becomes resilient to dryness, irritants, and allergens.

As parents, we must always keep in mind that our children’s welfare should come first. We must protect their emotional health because it can affect their self-esteem and confidence. Studies also show that having skin irritation or bad skin condition may also put them at risk of bullying in school.

Also, parents should take time to care for themselves so they can deal with the treatment of their children better. Parents should:

  • Have a safe and loving relationship with your child
  • Always consult a dermatologist for your baby’s skin condition
  • Address the skin concerns of your baby by following the advise of your dermatologist
  • Take good care of your physical and mental well-being
  • Take a break and be able to relax
  • Seek help if you need to

This according to Dr. Antonio Sison, Psychiatry + Dermatology and EMDR.

At the recently held “ProtectKnowlogy Bath Time Summit” at the Shangri-La at The Fort, Mommies, Daddies and people from the media were provided with tips on how to take better care of our babie’s skin. This aims empower parents to show their love through healthy skin. The summit is part of STADA’s game plan to help improve health care in the Philippines by providing quality products to the Filipinos such as Oilatum.

My takeaways gave me the confidence to become a better mother to my children. And as an Oilatum user, I am glad that there are products that really give value to our children’s welfare.

Always keep in mind Mommies and Daddies “When the skin is healthy, you are free to show your love”.
